159223579SR00122_Django_UncKerry Washington knows good style. She doesn’t just play one of the most stylish women on television, Scandal‘s Olivia Pope, she is just as fashionable off-screen. While some celebs stick with the same no-fail red carpet looks (column gowns, sparkles, “timeless” silhouettes), Kerry isn’t afraid to experiment. She isn’t scared of color, pattern or unique style combinations. Remember, she who wore a crop top and skirt to the SAG Awards when she was pregnant.

Take a look at the times Kerry Washington took a fashion risk and it worked:

1. NAACP Image Awards, 2013160454410PH00137_44th_NAACP

If you wear a lot of Easter pastel shades, there is a danger of winding up looking too juvenile. Kerry is wearing a pale pink top with mint skirt and carrying a pink bag. However, the dramatic silhouette keeps it chic. This doesn’t look like something an eight-year-old would wear to their birthday party.

2. Emmys, 2015Kerry-Washington-Emmys

It was already enough of a risk that Kerry wore a tricky calf-length dress to the 2015 Emmys. However, she upped the ante eve more by wearing a sparkly silver dress with shoulder, hem and back embellishments. She could have looked like a disco ball, but somehow she made this dress look effortless.

3. SAG Awards, 2014Kerry Washington

This was a look that helped redefine modern maternity dressing. We still weren’t seeing a lot of crop tops on the SAG Awards red carpet, so when a pregnant Kerry showed up in one and a full skirt, it was a moment. It was unexpected but amazing.

4. Teen Choice Awards, 2013175831512GD136_2013_Teen_Ch

It is difficult to go for quirky without heading into strange territory. Kerry shows how to stay on the quirky side of the line with this printed dress. It might be covered in jewels and lip prints, but the classic shape stops it from looking costume-y.

5. Emmy Awards, 2014Actress arrives at the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on August 25, 2014 in Los Angeles, California.

Kerry has a knack for finding pieces that do not look like the average red carpet gown. This orange dress with black insert was the perfect example of that. Was that shorts under there? Was that another dress? Was it just a piece of fabric? It didn’t matter. The important thing was she looked flawless.

6. Punk: Chaos to Couture Met Gala, 2013167730896JN00111_PUNK_Chaos

Gloves can be tricky to pull off on the red carpet. Kerry went for an above-the-elbow pair and showed everyone how it is done. She got the punk theme across with this look, but kept it very high fashion.

7. Baby2Baby Gala, 2015Kerry Washington Baby2Baby Gala Black Dress

There aren’t many people who could pull off a dress with falling flower petals and make it look cool. Kerry can. The dramatic silhouette of this black dress would have made enough of a statement, but she brought more drama with the flower detail.

8. Golden Globes, 2015

You see a lot of sequins on the awards season red carpet, but you do not often see people playing around with color, texture or pattern. Kerry isn’t afraid to do so. This pink and purple dress stood out from all the usual styles in the best way.

9. MTV Movie Awards, 2013165242350SG279_2013_MTV_Mov

Work it, girl. If you put this yellow belt-cum-skirt on the wrong person, it would have fallen flat on the red carpet. It needed someone with confidence, edge and who knew how to work it on the red carpet. Kerry pulled it off so well, you were probably tempted to go DIY your own.

10. Global Citizenship Festival, 2015attends the 2015 Global Citizen Festival to end extreme poverty by 2030 in Central Park on September 26, 2015 in New York City.

Here’s another example of a time Kerry took a cute detail and made it look cool. She toughens up the “XOXO” cutouts on her dress with the dark accessories and orange lipstick.

11. American Music Awards, 2012156493530SG505_40th_Anniver

Yellow is a color that a lot of celebs are hesitant to wear on the red carpet. Kerry didn’t just go for a long-sleeved yellow dress. She went with one that also had lace and fringe. Then she paired it with a coordinating clutch and salmon shoes. It was a bold look, but she carried it off with ease.
