The Met Gala is one of the biggest events in the fashion calendar. In fact, it might even be bigger than Fashion Month. A lot of us are still talking about the fabulous moments from the 2017 Met Gala. (Remember Rihanna?) However, people are already getting ready for the 2018 Met Gala with rumors that the new theme will be “Fashion and Religion.”

WWD reported that fashion and religion will be the theme of next year’s gala according to multiple sources. Some of the previous Met Gala themes such as ones centered around designers or technology are easy for viewers to see the link to fashion, but this one might have a few people puzzled. However, religion and fashion are connected in different ways. Designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Dolce & Gabbana have referenced religion in their collections. And it would make an interesting exhibition to show the link between fashion and religion.

Of course, the theme is not without controversy, with some calling the “fashion and religion” theme one of the most controversial yet.

Other previous Met Gala themes have been viewed as controversial too. The recent China: Through The Looking Glass theme had many worrying how it would translate on the red carpet and in the exhibition. However, the exhibition ended up being one of the most successful in the Met’s history with a staggering 815, 992 people attending.

The Met has yet to put the official word out on whether fashion and religion is the theme, but given the amount of discussion that’s already going around about it, it seems like it would be a promising show.
