151132341MB00703_DemocraticFirst Ladies’ style was frequently written off as boring or dowdy, but Michelle Obama made everyone sit up and take notice from the moment she and Barack Obama hit the campaign trail. She loves color and pattern, and she isn’t afraid to mix-and-match different pieces. She is even known to wear glitter and jumpsuits. How many other First Ladies ever did that? Michelle even made us love Banana Republic and J.Crew a bit more than we already did thanks to her fresh outfit combinations. Even when she is no longer in the White House, we are definitely going to be paying attention to her.

This is why Michelle Obama will always be the First Lady of Fashion:

1. Visiting London, 2015LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 15: First Lady Michelle Obama arrives for a visit to London on June 15, 2015 in London, England. The First Lady is travelling to London with her daughters, Malia and Sasha and her mother, Mrs. Marian Robinson, to continue a global tour promoting her Let Girls Learn Initiative.  During the visit she will meet with students at a girl's school to discuss how the UK and U.S. are working together to expand girl's education around the world. Now this is how you make lace look fresh. Michelle’s yellow dress with lace overlay is modern, chic and eye-catching. This is the sort of look that you will want to remember when Easter rolls around.

2. Chinese President Xi Jinping Visit, 2015Chinese President Xi Jinping, his wife Madame Peng Liyuan, U.S. President Barack Obama and U.S. first lady Michelle Obama pose for photographers on the North Portico ahead of a state dinner at the White House September 25, 2015 in Washington, DC. Obama and Xi announced an agreement on curbing climate change and an understanding on cyber security.

Michelle always looks amazing but she looks like a movie star here. She could have walked the red carpet at the 2016 Golden Globes and she would have looked totally appropriate. And you know she would have ended up on all the best-dressed lists.

3. Obama Home States Inaugural Ball, 2009Michelle Obama Inaugration White Dress

How could we ever forget about this look? It is hard to believe that this was seven years ago. This embroidered white dress did not have a bad angle. Plus, it made us fall in love with asymmetric necklines again.

4. G8 First Ladies Visit the Capitol Hill, 2009Michelle Obama G8 Meeting Yellow Dress

There are a lot of stylish (and powerful) women in this photo. If there was a black dress code memo, Michelle obviously chose to ignore it. This sunny yellow shift dress is so much better than a LBD. Michelle is also making a strong case for a contrasting floral corsage.

5. White House Cinco de Mayo Reception, 2010Michelle Obama Cinco de Mayo Floral Dress

Michelle loves color and print. This is a perfect example of that. She looks ready for summer in this multicolored dress paired with yellow sandals. There really is no color that she can’t pull off.

6. White House Easter Egg Roll, 2011Michelle Obama Easter Egg Event Floral Dress

Michelle is all the Easter dressing inspiration you need…actually, she is the only inspiration you need for any holiday. This gray dress with floral details is a fresh change from all the sugary sweet pastels, but it is still appropriate. If you had this dress in your closet, you would want to wear it everywhere.

7. Congressional Black Caucus Dinner, 2015Michelle Obama Black Caucas Dinner

Michelle may not be a celebrity who regularly attends movie premieres, but she definitely knows a good gown when she sees one. This strapless black gown with blue embroidery was proof of that. It was also nice to see that she kept her neck bare and just accessorized with earrings.

8. Barack Obama Being Sworn in as President Event, 2009Michelle Obama Swearing in Gold Coat

First of all, can we just talk about how adorable these two look here? Go stick a #relationshipgoals tag on it. If we focus on the fashion, Michelle showed us from the beginning how you can be a First Lady and wear clothes that are elegant and appropriate but still on trend. She also made us wish it was cold every day of the year so we could wear coats with contrasting gloves.

9. Inaugural Ball, 2013159824740CS048_DC_CELEBRATE

Here is another one of Michelle’s gowns that you can add to the most memorable list. It was bold, flattering and it fit her perfectly. The flipped out hair with bangs was one of her great hair moments.

10. White House Holiday Decorations Unveiling, 2015WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 02: First lady Michelle Obama walks into the East Room to speak with children during a preview of the 2015 holiday decor at the White House December 2, 2015 in Washington, DC. Everyone talks about how Kate Middleton always has appropriate outfits for holidays, but Michelle always nails them too. Even if you love yourself a wacky Christmas sweater, you have to admit that they just cannot compete with this green brocade dress. It’s also interesting that she went with a lighter green instead of the darker traditional one.

11. Kennedy Center Honorees at the White House Event, 2013WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 08: President Barack Obama (R) and First Lady Michelle Obama arrive for a reception at the White House for the 2013 Kennedy Center Honorees on December 8, 2013 in Washington, DC. The honorees this year include: opera singer Martina Arroyo, jazz musician Herbie Hancock, musician Billy Joel, actress Shirley MacLaine and musician Carlos Santana. Here is another movie star moment. This draped neckline on this teal dress is everything. It framed her decolletage and face. She didn’t need sparkles or feathers, she just needed amazing color and that detail.

12. Obama Signs Caregivers/Veterans Health Services Act, 2010Michelle Obama Bill Signing Geometic Blu Dress

Make a mental note of this outfit to wear to work when the weather is a bit better. Michelle’s geometric print dress with belt is appropriate but the look isn’t boring. The way Obama’s blue tie works with the look is great, but they do not look like they are #twinning.
