“Ratchet Is Dead,” declares New York Magazine today; they’ve just run an interview with Los Angeles stylist Lisa Katnic, the woman who developed what we now identify as “Miley Cyrus.” She styled Cyrus for the infamous VMAs performance, for the “We Can’t Stop” video, as well as the ladies of “Blurred Lines” and an upcoming Rihanna video. It seems that ratchet, like hipster, is one of those words that was mainstreamed so swiftly and irresponsibly, its meaning was stripped in the process.
But ratchet can’t be dead! It will live on forever in Miley Cyrus’ many, many absurd outfits of the last year or two. Here’s some of her best, viva la ratchet and all that.
