Who says there’s an age limit for being the school rebel? Fox8 reported how high school student Violet Burkhart was sent home on her very last day of high school because her dress was too short. The North Carolina senior explains that a teacher came up to her and measured her dress with a ruler. Then she said Violet must go home and change because her skirt was half an inch to short. Yes, half an inch. Since I know you’re curious, here is a photo of the dress in question:
Oh yeah, if this incident wasn’t already the perfect bookmark to four years of obscure math, sleep-inducing lectures and pointless courses (hello Geography), Violet was sent home at 1:00pm, with two hours left in in the day.
But wait, there’s more, Violet had worn the dress to school before without incident. Amy Redwine, Violet’s mother, explains the ridiculous situation:
“I literally looked back at the clock and I’m thinking, it’s 1:00 in the afternoon on her last day of her senior year. My daughter — it’s supposed to be one of her best days and she’s there crying.”
First of all, the school should be lucky any seniors decided to show up in the first place and didn’t stop coming a month ago, after they were accepted to college. But this is typical high school for you. One grumpy teacher who is mad that they had to work one extra day before getting two months off, ruins a monumental moment in a girl’s life. No big deal.
It wasn’t the school dress code that upset Amy, it was the poor way the situation with her daughter was handled, considering she had worn the dress on at least five different occasions. Instead of calling the principal a few choice words (because you can do that when you’re an adult) Amy came up with the best idea. She decided to wear the “controversial” dress to her daughter’s high school graduation. Amy explains her choice:
If her dress is too short, then my dress is too short and I’m going to wear it in front of everybody and be proud just like she should have been able to on her last day.”
True to her word, here are Violet and Amy in the “offensive” dress on her graduation day:
Of course the school board hasn’t commented on the situation. (Do they ever do anything, other than try to stop people from chewing gum?) Luckily Violet doesn’t have to attend the school next year.
On the positive side, she learned a valuable lesson (high school is weird) and she and everyone else learned she has an awesome mom.
The only thing I really want to know is, what is Violet wearing under her robes?
