Throughout history, there have been so many famous figures in fashion who created designs, popularized trends, and polarized critics with their sense of style. We call these people style icons, and most of them earn the title. But then there are the celebrities who have been knighted with the “style icon” title despite not truly earning it. Maybe they come from a famously fashionable family, perhaps they are simply famous–either way, when we recently asked who you folks think are the most overrated “style icons” out there, these are who you listed.
1. Blake Lively
Even though we love Blake’s beautiful hair to no end, it’s hard to justify how much attention her sense of style has gotten. Reader horusfitzfancy agrees:
“Okay I will get flak for this but… Blake Lively. Don’t get me wrong she’s super pretty and she wears nice things but I think people sometimes confuse ‘looks great in clothes’ with ‘has great/interesting taste.’ Does that make sense. Bracing myself.”
We shall forever adore her locks and face, but let’s not start reblogging her all over every fashion Tumblr just yet.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow
Besides being under the hilariously mistaken impression that all natural things are good for you, Gwyneth’s style is not quite at the level of icon that it is often given.
3. Zooey Deschanel
“I hate to say that, because I think she’s super cute and I’m not immune to trying to dress like her. I just lump her together with cupcakes and macaroons. The older I get (we’re the same age,) the more ridiculous I feel dressing like a cute baby.”
Dressing like a cute baby sounds less than appealing to us, too. Unless she dresses up as a cute baby with her future cute baby. That would be amazing.
4. Jennifer Aniston
Though she possessed one of the most iconic haircuts of the ’90s, many feel she’s not quite at the level of style icon. Though she picked a great outfit for Thursday’s Critics’ Choice Awards, she failed miserably at the premiere for Cake…and came off a little too self-congratulatory for going makeup-free in the film. As Heather said, “She seems to be on an all-time best dressed list for wearing wardrobe basics from the Gap.” All in all, she’s a satisfactory celeb in the style department (albeit an incredibly likable one usually!), but that’s about it.
5. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, AKA Kate Middleton
Hooooooo boy, did not see this one coming on the list! Multiple people named one of the most famous style inspirations of our time as being one of the most overrated of the bunch. Perhaps she should go back to wearing hoodies and get some of us normals on her side.
6. Sarah Jessica Parker
Many of you dissented on our Facebook page (though some agreed), but I stand by my choice. Playing a stylish character on television doesn’t make you yourself stylish, so nay. I cannot grant the woman who portrayed Carrie Bratshaw my blessing.
7. Johnny Depp
Mr. Depp is definitely on my list of the most irritating celebs, but he’s also one of the most overrated “stylish” men in the business. Dude, what’s with those glasses? We get it. You’re weird. Now either stop wearing those or go be Dov Charney‘s assistant, because that’s who these glasses put you on par with.
8. Alexa Chung
As with so many folks who work as models, Alexa Chung looks fantastic in clothes and writes about fashion excellently, but does that make her a style icon? Commenter emily.s says no:
“i think a lot of her style is just… mismatched, ill-fitting and wack-a-doo. it doesn’t mean you’re ‘quirky’ or ‘avant-garde.’ alexander mcqueen? avant-garde. calf-high boots with denim culottes and a peter pan collar? yikes.”
On a related note, can culottes just please end? Right now, if possible, before they infect the rest of the world beyond just Fashion Week-ers.
9. Chloe Sevigny
Commenter Dalaine remarks that she “just [doesn’t] get her,” and while I personally love Chloe in plenty of films, her style is just a little too eclectic to me. And by “eclectic,” I mean “stuff your best friend’s hippie aunt might buy you for your birthday from a store that also sells bongs.”
10. Lana Del Rey
We get it, you’re supposed to be an edgier version of Ginger from Gilligan’s Island with lip injections.
11. Iggy Azalea
Though she has a few incredibly catchy songs, Iggy Azalea is not an effing style icon. And yet, there she is on MTV, hosting House Of Style. Reader (and possessor of the coolest name ever) Chanel Foxworth explains it perfectly:
“Iggy Azalea. C’mon. She’s been famous for about 5 minutes. … The media plays fast and loose with the term Icon. An Icon is Iman or Madonna. Kate Moss, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Victoria Beckham to me are real icons.”
12 and 13. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
Another surprising choice we got on Facebook, but one that brings up an important question: would these two be style icons/famous whatsoever if there weren’t two of them? Personally, I think they’re pretty effing fashionable, but hey! That’s just my opinion. We’ll never know, but what we do know is that this creepy Vine of them is still the best thing ever.
