We said that Nicki Minaj deserved an award for the way she handled her wardrobe malfunction at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards like a true professional. However, it looks like an acting award may be more appropriate than a showmanship one, because TMZ is reporting that the whole thing was fake.
Nicki claims that her zipper was undone when she performed “Bang Bang” with Jessie J and Ariana Grande because she didn’t have enough time to change out of the sparkly green outfit she wore while performing “Anaconda.”
However, eyewitnesses tell TMZ that during Nicki’s rehearsals she was performing with the dress unzipped. Hmmm….One witness says that it caught their eye because they thought she was wearing a robe.
So whose story are you going to believe? I don’t doubt that Nicki could recover from a wardrobe malfunction like a pro, but even for a performer she did seem quite calm about the whole thing. I figured it was because she is comfortable being naked, but maybe it was because the whole near nip slip was rehearsed a hundred times. If it was authentic, surely there would have been a few moments of panic. And she would have held that dress with both hands, and wouldn’t have been concerned with fixing her hair.
On the other hand, this could be a case of people just wanting to stir up (more) controversy and get publicity. Regardless of what was real and what was staged, it was the most memorable thing from the VMAs–apart from Katy Perry and Riff Raff‘s double denim disaster–so it clearly worked. Any additional information about the nip slip, will just get us talking about it more. Well played Nicki, very well played, indeed.
