This week, fashion types were overjoyed to learn that the great Nicolas Ghesquière had finally landed at a house deserving of his phenomenal talent: Louis Vuitton. The slot, of course, was recently left vacant by Marc Jacobs, who wanted to focus on his namesake label. While we’re curious to see what a visionary like Ghesquière will do with all those monograms, we’re mostly just happy he’ll be back to work soon.
As you may know, Ghesquière came out of nowhere back in 1997 (at the astounding age of 25) when he was plucked from the accessories division to helm the house of Balenciaga. After fifteen years, he managed to steer the venerable but ailing brand into the future, designing one brilliant, challenging, trend-defying, moment-defining collection after anothe (and some really awesome hats!). He and the brand parted ways last year.
In honor of his new position at LV, here’s 15 of (some of) his greatest looks on the red carpet…
Cate Blanchett, who wears a lot of Balenciaga, wore this explosion of shine and texture to the Sydney premiere of Benjamin Button.
Diane Kruger in a Starry Night-like print for the Elle Women in Hollywood party back in 2009.
A sun-kissed Emma Stone at the Critics Choice Awards.
A favorite: multiple-time face of the brand Jennifer Connelly wore this unforgettable dress from the riotous Spring 2008 collection.
Jessica Chastain, as beautifully-fitted a sparkly black gown can be.
Model Jessica Stam in a gray eyelet mini in 2009.
Brand loyalist Julianne Moore in glittery, caped pink…
And a relaxed gray silhouette at the Golden Globes in 2010.
Blanchett again, in a look from Spring 2007’s mind-blowing futurism collection.
Chastain, who should apparently wear pink more often–it suits her remarkably well.
Kristen Wiig in a ghostly look at the Emmys.
Alexa Chung, looking ladylike at Cannes.
The face of the fragrance, Kristen Stewart (also at Cannes) wore these awesome pants to promote On the Road.
Michelle Williams looked ethereal at the Critics Choice Movie Awards.
And then the 2007 Oscars: while Nicole Kidman is practically synonymous with the word “statuesque,” this dress managed to make her even more so.
And a very special bonus:
Beyonce wore Ghesquière’s unforgettable “robot leggings” (from Spring 2007) which are approximately 1/2 of our dream C-3PO Halloween costume.
