Sometimes, fashion can be really confusing. It’s hard not to laugh at some designs, though NYFW has its fair share of incredibly interesting and intricate pieces. I can’t discount the work and time it takes to put on a Fashion Week runway show with the likes of Anna Wintour and Kim Kardashian sitting front row, impeccably makeupped eyes glaring down the models, but sometimes, it’s really, really fun to laugh at it.
While watching the live stream of the DKNY show yesterday with Sara, I couldn’t help but chuckle. See, a few nights ago, I was watching Clueless and the models walking down the runway immediately reminded me of the gym class scene where Dion delivers the most brutal burn to Amber. The black and white, the super ’90s fashion, it just clicked. So, I decided to see if other designers may have taken inspiration from other movies. And lo and behold, look what I found!
Givenchy and Mrs. Doubtfire
Look, I’m not saying I’m not impressed with the intricacy of this face mask, but come on. You’re not Alexander McQueen, Givenchy.
Betsey Johnson and Edward Scissorhands
Part of Betsey’s show was directly influenced by the ’90s, so I went a little out of the box here.
Jeremy Scott and Austin Powers: Internation Man of Mystery
This is just too perfect.
J.Crew and The Little Mermaid
The color, the off the shoulders, the hand position. All she needs is a starfish in her hair.
DKNY and Clueless
The aforementioned show I was talking about. It’s pretty easy to see it side-by-side.
Tory Burch and Aladdin
Everyone could probably find runway look that looks like Jasmine, but who else could find one that looks like the freakin’ magic carpet?
Lacoste and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Okay, this was almost too easy. A shiny silver suit just SCREAMS Dr. Evil.
A strategically placed flower petal never hurt nobody. Except maybe Kevin Spacey.
Reem Acra and The Hunchback of Notre Dame
If you never wanted to dress up like Esmeralda when you were younger, you’re doing it wrong. And this Reem Acra look can help you mend that.
Monique Lhuillier and 10 Things I Hate About You
That prom dress will always be the perfect prom dress, and this is just the high-fashion version of it.
