Anyone who’s ever bought makeup on a budget knows about NYX Cosmetics. You’ve probably seen the brand anywhere from your local drugstore or Target to any old Urban Outfitters, and if you’ve never tried something of theirs, you’re seriously missing out (their Soft Matte Lip Creams were my gateway into the liquid lipstick world). Now, NYX founder Toni Ko is hoping her knack for creating affordable will beauty will translate into the fashion accessory world: she’s launching her own eyewear line, Perverse Sunglasses, and even sunglass hoarders like me will find it hard to resist buying a pair of 12.
After selling NYX to L’Oreal in June 2014 for a reported $500 million, Ko decided to step back into retail rather than making moves toward retirement. Of her decision to launch an eyewear brand, Ko told WWD,
“I passed by an optical store that reminded me of Sephora, full of high-priced multibrand items, and thought, ‘Why isn’t there a store that’s like a MAC store, but for sunglasses? With an American brand at a great price point?’”
With most American sunglass brands like Ray Ban and Westward Leaning living within the lofty price point of $150 and up, a high-end, yet affordable, eyewear brand is as-of-yet untapped territory. Sure, you can get your average $10-$15 pair from Forever 21 or H&M, but are you really getting the quality you want? Ko explained,
“There is a gray area between where you find cheaper sunglasses at $5, $10 and $15, or fashion brands that have sunglasses as a second thought, or the non-branded customer experience. Something clicked at that moment. This business is exactly the spirit of NYX Cosmetics.”
Perverse shades range in price from $30 to $60, making this new brand the accessory equivalent of so many popular NYX products: it’s quality product for the everywoman. The company, which currently exists as an exclusively e-commerce business with plans to open retail stores in the near future, already features 125 styles and 450 color designs. With that much variety that early on, you can only imagine how much they could expand over the next year alone. There are almost too many great sunglasses to choose from on the Perverse website, but you can find some of my favorites below:
Ever since I made the decision to let go of my signature aviators, this more subtle cat-shape lens has been my go-to. The shape of the metal arms makes this pair much more unique than any others I’ve seen.
Maroon, marsala, oxblood, wine—whatever you want to call it, it’s going to be the color of the season.
I could totally see someone like Cara Delevingne pulling these off, but maybe that just has to do with the fact that this model could be her twin.
The ’70s are back in a big way this season, and these sunglasses are the perfect way for anyone, even the most anti-’70s girl, to rock that trend.
No real explanation here. These are just so freakin’ cute.
