It’s common knowledge that breastfeeding is, well, one of the most common things in the entire world, and yet breastfeed mothers are continuously pushed to the side and told to cover up. Therefore, when a new photo shoot in Glamour Magazine featuring Olivia Wilde was debuted, it came as both a mild shock and a pleasant surprise that the actress was shown breastfeeding her son Otis.
Otis, Olivia’s son with Jason Sudeikis, lays naked in her lap, breastfeeding as the pair sits in a diner booth. While the setting isn’t the most glamorous (which was presumably the point), it is depicting a public setting–a fantastic choice considering breastfeeding mothers are often told to leave public areas, as though feeding their babies is somehow offensive to others who can’t handle boobs without losing their brains. Of course, she is also wearing some gorgeous clothes: a Roberto Cavalli dress paired with Prada heels and accessorized with Yossi Harari earrings, a Prada scarf, and a ring from Lanvin.
Of the shoot, Olivia said this:
“Being shot with Otis is so perfect because any portrait of me right now isn’t complete without my identity as a mother being a part of that. Breastfeeding is the most natural thing. …
“Now it feels like Otis should always be on my breast. It felt like we were capturing that multifaceted woman we’ve been discussing—that we know we can be. You can be someone who is at once maternal and professional and sexy and self-possessed.”
The taboo on breasts, female nipples, and breastfeeding mothers is still wildly (Wildely!) pervasive in our culture, so photo shoots as progressive as Glamour‘s are a welcome relief to the idea that female bodies are (A) inherently sexual and (B) requiring of being concealed. So, kudos to both Olivia and Glamour. We couldn’t be more stoked about this.

UPDATE: Little man totally peed on her dress.
