Who needs a stylist when the Internet exists? I’m basically ready to give up dressing myself and just let The Gloss pick out all my clothes for me, because when left to my own devices I wind up wearing the same thing every day for a year, and when The Gloss picks my looks, everything turns out pretty well. But now I have the most difficult fashion challenge of all: Comfortable shoes for walking long distances in cities, but that still look good.

The comfortable urban walking flat might be the ultimate fashion Holy Grail. Back in the 90s I had a pair of Mephisto sandals that were probably the closest I’ve ever come, but even though I bought three pairs, they eventually wore out and were discontinued. The fashion sneaker was a godsend for that particular issue, but the fashion sneaker only works when pristine, and it is tough to keep them pristine without a chauffeur and a purse full of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that the “fashion sneaker” effect on me is less “carefree French editor in Isabel Marant” and more “soccer mom.” I mean, that’s true, but the fact that I am not currently the editor of French Vogue is a sensitive topic for me, and I’d prefer it if my feet did not advertise that fact.

I travel a lot and I do not own a car, so I am looking for a pair of comfortable shoes that I can walk in all day over cobblestones without having to roll around on the floor groaning, “My feet hurt sooooooo much” when I get back to the hotel–or my house–at the end of the day.

So please, deliver unto me your recommendations for shoes that are comfortable to walk in but still look good on one’s feet. Otherwise I will be forced to buy gold tweed sneakers with holographic trim, and I’m pretty sure only Rihanna can pull those off.
