I don’t want to be accused of pearl clutching here, but I’m just not feeling the Sexy Osama bin Laden costume.

To be fair, there are a lot of people who have made fun of murderous dictators in ways that I find completely acceptable and funny. Mel Brooks once said that The Producers was made in part because “with comedy, we can rob Hitler of his poshumous power.” But then the Producers was made 25 years after World War II and not, say, immediately after Hitler’s death. It also possessed a level intelligence that seemed to go beyond “strapping on a racially insensitive nose, turban, and a halter dress.”

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking “Mel Brooks would have at least called it a Bin Laid-in costume.” I’m thinking that, too.

Still, maybe it’s good that we can laugh in the face of national tragedy! Maybe this is a sign that we’re healing? Or it’s just terrible taste. Pick one.
