It’s already been an incredible month for plus size fashion, and we’re only eight days in. Ashley Nell Tipton slayed a cover for Skorch Magazine, blogger Nicolette Mason announced that she will be launching a capsule collection with Addition Elle, and Forever 21 released a plus size activewear collection with Ashley Graham at the helm. Now, Rachel Roy is expanding her wallet-friendly line, Rachel Rachel Roy, to include plus size pieces! February has some big shoes to fill.

According to Refinery 29, the size 14 to 24 collection will launch in select Macy’s stores during the second week of February, and online on Macys.com and RachelRoy.com later that same month. What makes this collection different from its plus size counterparts, though, is that each plus size piece is the exactly the same as what’s available to straight size shoppers. Much like Melissa McCarthy designed her Seven7 line to give plus size shoppers offerings that aren’t just the ill-fitting, shapeless pieces that are, unfortunately, the norm, Roy “kept her designs the same across the board, only adding slight alterations throughout.” Since Roy isn’t plus size herself, she brought in a consultant to make sure that she was doing the collection justice.

Roy explained to Refinery 29 that this expansion was a long time coming:

“My customers have actually been asking me for years for plus-size, which we like to call ‘curvy.’ I think [the term] is just more modern and doesn’t sound as old-school. We wanted to do it for a long time and now just made sense. It’s not that it’s any different [than the regular line], it’s just that we got the fit right. And as soon as I could pull together the correct team to do that, we did it.”

She elaborated, saying that she wanted plus size women to dress in a way that makes them feel the way they want, citing her experience with maternity clothes as the point at which she realized just how unflattering larger-sized clothing can be when designers don’t think about design.

As exciting as this new line is, the curvy collection only includes a portion of her designs. Expanding isn’t out of the question though. She said,

“I do feel that I would love to give as many options as possible, but in order to do things right, I would like to start out small and really capture my customers’ confidence and how it fits and makes her feel. Once I have that down and there is a nice ebb and flow to it, then extending would be the right choice.”

Roy’s designs are a favorite among public figures like Jennifer GarnerHayden PanettiereGwyneth Paltrow, and Michelle Obama, so you know a designer with street cred like that is going to be nothing but wonderful to the plus size community.
