There is offensive clothing that you wonder what the design team’s questionable inspiration was when they were creating a collection, and then there are garments that are so blatantly offensive that you wonder what the heck is going on at HQ and who are the horrible customers they are trying to appeal to. Buzzfeed reported that there was a t-shirt for sale with the slogan “It’s Not Rape, It’s A Snuggle With A Struggle” written across the chest, accompanied by two hands formed into the shape of a heart. Really.
The t-shirt was actually for sale in The SM Store, a department store with locations across the Philippines. Writer, Karen Kunawicz was shocked to discover that the t-shirt for sale in the boy’s section. She photographed it and posted it on Facebook. The post has been shared almost 4,000 times and many people took to social media to express their anger that the mall was promoting rape culture. After the outrage, The SM Store posted an apology on their Facebook page and have pulled the t-shirt from their stores. It is terrible that this shirt was available for sale (on purpose or accidentally), However, the fact that that someone actually thought to design this t-shirt, yet alone get it manufactured is unfathomable. Any t-shirt that promotes rape culture is an obvious or subtle way should not be allowed to be produced or sold. Period.
