Reese Witherspoon carries Chloe's $4000 python skin Paratay handbag

Please note the handbag Reese Witherspoon is carrying in the above Splash photo. The purse is a leather and python ‘Paratay’ bag by Chloe and retails in the neighborhood of $4000 (if you’re counting). PETA is predictably angry with Witherspoon and offers a characteristically gruesome/dubious explanation of how her fancy bag is made:

“Hoses are inserted into the mouths of large snakes and their bodies are pumped full of water to loosen their skin so that it will cut away more easily. The animals’ peeled, writhing bodies are then discarded, and it often takes days for the animals to die from the effects of shock and dehydration.”

It’s worth noting that PETA once deemed Reese the World’s Sexiest Vegetarian.

Regardless of how the snakes are killed, the bag is actually kind of illegal in California, where Witherspoon resides. Under the California Penal Code Section 653o it is “unlawful to import python into California for commercial purposes” (including possession with intent to sell). Reese gets off, however, because it’s not illegal to buy it elsewhere and bring it in. Which is a pretty gaping loop hole.

Anyway, we were a bit surprised to learn of this law. What do you think?
