Rihanna has just booked herself a major new high-fashion job as the face of Balmain.
She announced the big news this morning on Instagram, posting the first images from the Spring 2014 campaign.
“Guess who’s the new BALMAIN Woman???!!!!!!! #BALMAIN #MommaImadeIt #CaribbeanGalRunTing @olivier_rousteing,” she wrote alongside a picture of her in denim and chains, with her hair curly, tousled, and mostly in her face.
“#BALMAIN #BALMAIN #BALMAINGirl #Fashion… Shot by @inezvinoodh, styled by @melzy917 , Hair by @yusefhairnyc , makeup by @_yadim !!!! @olivier_rousteing love your designs!!! Thank you!#BalmainLife” she captioned the second photo, in which she wears pink.
Vogue UK says the pictures were shot in New York by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. I cannot say I understand why she appears to be about to have sex in an empty steam room, or why they made the choice to cover her face with her hair. She looks great, but if I had that face I would just get a pixie cut and run around all day going, “FACE! Look at my face!” (It wouldn’t seem weird, because when you’re that beautiful people will excuse just about anything.)
OK, we’re not always huge Balmain fans around here. They have in the past had a habit of making ugly, costumey clothes and then assigning prices with a roulette wheel to make it seem like what they’re doing is important. But if anyone can pull it off, Rihanna can. Rihanna can pretty much wear anything and make it look good. That’s lucky for us, because this new job likely means we’ll be seeing Rihanna on a lot of red carpets in Balmain in the near future.
“In front of the camera, she makes you feel like she is the only girl in the world,” said Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing. “When the woman that inspires you wears your creations, your vision feels complete.”
