So, last night was the State Dinner and a lot happened.
While some people are talking about the gorgeous Jason Wu gown that Michelle Obama had on, and others are loving the countless memes sparked by the bromance between President Barack Obama and The Internet’s Boyfriend, and Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, there is a more important issue concerning other amazing-looking humans to address.
Wade Wilson Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively showed up looking beautiful and perfect as always but some publications had some choice words for Lively’s dress.
Everyone is yelling (maybe not yelling, but definitely writing snarky headlines) that it looks like a robe. And while I do agree that if you told me that it was robe, I’d believe you, it’s also the freakin’ perfect dress on her. The high slit, the cool shoulder cutouts, the color. I mean, Blake Lively could literally wear a trash bag with a belt and still look flawless, so that’s not really saying something. But honestly, I think this may be my most favorite look for her as of recent.
So no, you’re not going to spend an unheard of amount of money on an off-the-runway Ralph & Russo silk robe dress like Blake (though, I doubt she actually bought it but whatevz, you know what I mean). But you may want to try out some really cool robe dresses and I don’t blame you. Kylie Jenner has done it. Rihanna has definitely done it on numerous occasions. And maybe you’re thinking it’s your turn to try out this risky style for a black tie event you have coming up (or maybe one you made up in your head).
It’s time to take on robe dresses! Here are 7 that you should definitely try out.
Millie Mackintosh Satin Crepe Maxi Dress (ASOS, $119)
A fiery red dress in an easy silk wrap style. What more could you ask for?
Stone Cold Fox ‘Le Robe’ Dress (Revolve, $266)
This is the only one on this list that genuinely looks like lingerie. But it’s really pretty, right? I’d totally wear it.
Jay Godfrey Palazzo Silk Cold Shoulder Maxi Dress (Gilt, $209)
This may not have the thigh-high slit, but it’s got the cool shoulder cutouts and TBH, that’s the best part of Blake’s dress.
Glamorous Tallulah Maxi Dress (Nasty Gal, $72)
Another red dress, but this is in a softer tone. The flutter sleeves are a nice touch.
Fame and Partners Devan Dress (Fame and Partners, $209)
Oh god I love this dress so much. WHY DON’T I HAVE A REALLY FANCY PARTY TO GO TO?!
Mason by Michelle Mason Plunge Neck Kimono Gown (Revolve, $316)
This is the most expensive of the bunch and rightfully so (it’s also on sale, so that’s saying something). It’s pretty gorgeous and only kind of looks like you didn’t put any effort into getting dressed.
Crinkle Silk Wrap Dress (Free People, $300)
Now if you really want to look like you just rolled out of bed, why not wear a dress thats wrinkled on purpose?
Missguided Plus Dipped Hem Wrap Midi Dress (ASOS, $43)
A more casual take on a wrap/robe dress that I’m totally into. You could easily dress this up or down depending on the shoes and accessories.
