Every season I allow myself to purchase of one new shoe. Most seasons the choice is easy and the it shoe basically throws itself at my feet (here’s looking at you Stan Smiths.). When you know, you know, right? However, this spring/summer I find that it is almost impossible to choose just one. Thanks to the inundation of individually diluted trends there are more it shoes then will fit in my closet-sized New York City apartment. From flatforms and Birkenstocks to pointed toe stilettos and lace-up sandals the choices are endless. We already know what a man’s shoes says about him, but now it’s time to choose which ones you want for yourselves. The following is a guide to the top trends and my most anticipated contenders.
With the height of a platform but the functionality of a flat, there is nothing not to love about this summer’s flatform. Lose nothing in the way of long, lean looking legs while still being able to run around and dance through every hot summer night sans personal injury. Though there may still be some haters, once a trend goes Chanel, there’s no going back. And they went Chanel all right–white, strappy and Chanel all over. However, my favorite pairs actually reign from Prada and Carvan.
Once reserved for the crunchy granola, tree-hugging San Francisco types, Birkenstocks have found their way into the hearts and minds of the fashion industry by way of Celine’s model’s feet. There is something to be said for ugly chic and these shoes are the epitome of just that. There is nothing like a beautiful dress and an ugly shoe when you want to look like I woke up like this effortless. Not quite convinced? Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Birkenstock-with-socks debut will eliminate any seconds thoughts.
If you’re searching for a pair on a budget, check out these Betula by Birkenstock Flip Flops ($45).
Still not quite ready to go full Birkenstock? Try a slide sandal. An easy alternative that affords about the same effect. They’re elevated, smart and will proclaim to the world that you get ‘fasshh-i-on’ with a capital F. Rock these puppies with anything from culottes to a pair of wide leg trousers. For extra fashion brownie points, wear them with socks and something cropped–all the better to see them! They also come in a wide variety of textures, patterns and finishes, so whether you are into the sporty or the sparkly, there is a slide just for you.
White Tennis Shoes
Is there any better way to dress down a sundress then a pair of white tennis shoes? I think not. They have the power to make whatever you’re wearing seem cool, clean and effortless. And it is a non-negotiable that they are taking the industry by storm; even French designer Hedi Slimane has succumbed to the trend. Whether you’re a purist who sticks to her Converse and Adidas or an experimentalist rocking velvet Superga, you can do no wrong with a pair of white kicks this summer.
Pointed Toe Stilettos
The pointy toe pump of the ’60’s is back with a higher vamp, a thinner heel and a stronger point. Without a doubt the most seductive heel of the summer, no man is invincible to the effects of a stiletto heal on a woman’s gams. A pointy toe makes a basic pump feel modern, sleek and sophisticated. Or in the cases of Cara Delevingne and Victoria Beckham at the Met Gala this year, sexier than ever. You can wear it with an LBD, high-waisted shorts and a chiffon shirt, or flouncy floral dress for a cute date outfit.
Block Heel Sandals
Block heel sandals are like the Switzerland of shoes for days when you want to be wearing flip-flops but need to be wearing heels. They are a happy neutral that bats for both teams: style and comfort. And the variations are endless, from studs to simple, single straps you can be sure to find a block heel sandal that fulfills all your hearts desires and sartorial needs. You can wear them from music festival to boardroom with just a few quick adjustments (lose the feathers, fringe and floral crown).
As stubborn as their animal namesake, the mule has persevered through yet another season. This season’s mules are chunkier with sturdier heels. This shoe could be found on the runways of Celine, Chloe, The Row, Altuzarra and even on the feet of Anna Wintour, the woman, the myth, the legend. And best of all? The dreaded clomp, clomp, clomp is said to have been eliminated. The power of technology!
Peep Toe Booties
Having a hard time giving up the little leather booties you wore all winter? Well look no further than the peep toe boot, an easy transitional piece that lets you show off that fresh summer pedi while still rocking an edgy bootie. Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson and Gwyneth Paltrow are all doing it so why not give it a go? Peer pressure! But only just this once.
Lace Up Sandals
Giving gladiator sandals a run for their money, lace up sandals are reaching new heights, literally. Gucci and Marissa Webb tied their iterations all the way up to the kneecap for a statement making effect. Up, up and away! Try them with jean cut offs or a floral sun dress.
Bigger is better when it comes to this outrageous trend. Single sole platform heels stomped down the runways adorned with everything from sequins to feathers in every color and shape imaginable. While Dolce & Gabbana’s looked befitting of a gilded Greek goddess, John Galliano’s looked as if they came from another world altogether, Mars maybe? This trend is all about having fun, the quirkier and crazier the better.
