A few weeks ago, we spent some time researching cool items from uncool places—Dress Barn, Talbot’s, Chico’s, Burlington Coat Factory. This led to an office-wide debate about what constitutes an “uncool” brand, which in turn led to a series of office-wide revelations about brands we’re embarrassed to buy. Nearing the top of co-workers’ most beloved/ashamed acquisitions? Jessica Simpson. Especially shoes. We were shocked.
Now, there are a few celebrity fashion brands we wouldn’t call uncool–The Row and Victoria Beckham spring to mind–but very few famous people can just waltz in on a highly specialized industry and produce good work.
…Luckily, they all have giant design teams making the actual decisions for them. Hence, every now and again, an uncool celebrity brand gets it right.
Even Carlos by Carlos Santana.
