Everyone is focused on New York Fashion Week and all the new fashion and beauty trends that are appearing on the runways but there is another fashion event that you need to know about. UK Plus Size Fashion Week (or UKPSFW to those in the know) is a multi-day fashion event that is described as the largest and hottest plus size fashion event in the United Kingdom and Europe.
UKPSFW took place from September 11 to September 13 in London, just days ahead of the regular London Fashion Week shows. It has a similar schedule as any other fashion week with lots of fashion shows, glamorous guests and amazing clothes everywhere you look but the key difference is that it shows that style isn’t restricted by size or shape. UKPSFW is a celebration of different bodies.
UK Plus Size Fashion Week was started in 2013 by Rianne Ward. On their website, they describe the event as a “curvy fashion extravaganza and experience that has been created to bridge the gap between brands, buyers and consumers.” The event isn’t just for VIP editors, celebrities, buyers and bloggers. There were shows that were open to the public too.
One of the other brilliant things about the event is that it features designers and brands that are affordable. It’s one thing to see clothes that come in a wider range of sizes but it doesn’t mean much if the average person couldn’t afford them. UK Plus Size Fashion Week featured numerous high street retailers (read: affordable brands) that plus size girls probably already have on their shopping list including Boohoo, Evans, Very, Phase Eight and more.
UK Plus Size Fashion Week attendees can also snag their favorite runway outfits because the event features pop-up shops. In addition to the pop-up shops and fashion shows, UKPSFW had panel discussions with fashion and clothing brands, industry experts and magazines; performances; makeup and hair demonstrations; styling shows and a choir flash mob. Every fashion week should feature a choir flash mob, don’t you think?
You probably want to book your ticket for next year’s show already but even if most of us can’t make it across the pond to attend the event in person, it is great to hear about a fashion. (You can also still follow them on Instagram and Twitter to stay up to date with the latest news). While the regular New York, London, Milan and Paris shows have become more inclusive with their model choices and clothing options, there is still a lot more that can be done and it is great to see events like UK Plus Size Fashion Week help change that.
