Balmain announced yesterday that Olivier Rousteing–a “key deputy” to former creative director Christophe Decarnin–will succeed his old boss at the helm of ridiculously expensive French label Balmain. Balmain chief executive officer Alain Hivelin said, “I am convinced of Olivier’s talent and ability to build upon the successes of the house. He begins his new task with a great understanding and appreciation of the unique DNA of the brand.” For his part, Rousteing plans to “honor that confidence by ensuring that Pierre Balmain always remains one of the leading brands that others look to as a reference,” although (according to WWD) “he did not elaborate on his vision for the house.”
For those of us (like Robin Givhan) who were hoping to see a change in the label’s direction, this does not represent a huge change and therefore doesn’t bode much for progress away from $1500 ripped t-shirts. Karl Lagerfeld doesn’t give a fuck either way.
However, it is worth noting that Rousteing is very, very good-looking.
