The Vanity Fair International Best Dressed List 2014 has been revealed. It features obvious choices like Lupita Nyong’o and Cate Blanchett, and the usual mix of HRH royalty, and stylish art world people we have never heard of. There were a few surprises, namely Pharrell and his Grammy hat, who had to share a spot. Sadly, what wasn’t too surprising was the lack of Young Hollywood represented, given that Vanity Fair traditionally chooses classy women of a certain age–I guess crop tops and rainbow hair aren’t really their thing.
These are the 11 stylish celebs we wish Vanity Fair put on their best dressed list:
1. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has always had great style. Her twee schoolgirl look from a few years ago may have gone unnoticed, but no self-respecting fashion critic can deny her transformation into a full-fledged supermodel. She pulls off crop tops and rompers better than runway models. Sorry, Karlie Kloss.
You may not agree with every single styling choice that Rihanna makes, but you cannot deny that she is an innovator. She switches her look (and hair) so often, that it is difficult to keep track. She even wore a nipple-exposing crystal dress to accept a fashion award and people still thought she looked great.
There are so many stylish ladies from Orange Is The New Black, and not one of them was featured on the list. What is up with that? How could they not include Laverne Cox? Not only is she a great actress and activist, there is no dress on this planet that she cannot pull off.
4. Emma Stone
Emma Stone wears things that you think no person could pull off, regardless of how good their DNA is. She matches sparkly eyeshadow with sparkly dresses (see above) and she doesn’t turn into a sad-looking beauty queen. Emma also put to rest the idea that redheads can’t wear red a long time ago. Doesn’t that earn her a spot?
5. Maisie Williams
Given that VF bases their choices around what is popular in film and television, I would have bet someone from Game Of Thrones would be featured. My pick would have been
Arya Stark Maisie Williams. Perhaps the one reason she didn’t make it on to the list was because she wore that brilliant dress made out of comic books after the recipients had already been finalized. Reserve her a spot for next year.
6. Blake Lively
Excluding her new Preserve website, Blake Lively does nothing except walk red carpets looking fabulous. You think that would make her a shoe-in, but I guess not. There should also be a best hair list, because Blake’s golden hair deserves every possible accolade.
Sadly Vanity Fair, probably thought that Kristen Stewart‘s tendency to pair sneakers with dresses was too edgy, so they left her off the list. It’s their loss because that is one of my favorite things about her. Even Karl Lagerfeld approves of her look, which is why she stars in the new Chanel campaign. If Karl likes something, we should all listen.
8. Jennifer Lawrence
I had to double check that Jennifer Lawrence was not on the list because she has been killing it on the red carpet for years. (The Dior contract helps.) What could Vanity Fair not like about Jennifer? Does her tendency to trip and fall in couture ruin her chances?
9. Elle Fanning
Is there some rule that the Vanity Fair Best Dressed List can only be made up of proper adults? If not, then why is Elle Fanning not on the list? She earned her spot years ago. She wears princess gowns without turning them into Halloween costumes, and she made us all want to buy yellow eyeliner.
10. Lucy Hale
I think the people at Vanity Fair HQ may not be familiar with Pretty Little Liars, which is why Lucy Hale was missed from the list. While the characters on PLL may have questionable style, Lucy works a variety of different looks including tricky-to-pull-off mullets and cowboy boots and makes them look amazing.
Does VF have something against babies too? They have men’s, women’s and a couple’s section, but what about the oh-so-stylish toddlers? Harper Beckham‘s outfits are as squee-inducing a her rosy cheeks and big eyes. So what Victoria Beckham dresses her? No one minds when they’re looking at a cute baby.
