Each time I think it’s not possible for me to like this lady any more than I already do, she goes on television and says yet more awesome things. Comedic actress/plus size fashion plate Melissa McCarthy went on Anderson Cooper‘s daytime talk show today, only to be confronted with a somewhat embarrassing high school yearbook photo of herself rocking an asymmetrical New Wave haircut. (Some people think this was too early for her to have been properly Goth, but Melissa graduated high school in the late 80s, and I’m pretty sure that’s when Goth as we know it was invented.) Never one to shy away from a hilarious, self-effacing story, McCarthy then went into detail about all the ways she was fashion forward as a teen, ways not limited to, but including, wearing turtlenecks as pants. How do you even do that, you ask? With safety pins, natch.

She also spoke a bit about her efforts to lose weight, and I think she has a very sane-sounding approach to it:

“I’ve been up and down.  I’ve been much thinner since my second baby. I’m still working on it. It’s a work in progress. I hope I wake up at, like, 94 pounds, but I don’t think that’s going to happen…There’s so many other things to worry about.  I still worry about it, but I think, my kids are healthy, I’ve got a great husband, and I go to work every day and do what I want. I’ll keep working on [my body].  I just can’t put any time to worrying about it.”

A woman who prioritizes her career, family, and general mental well being over losing weight? Imagine that! I’m sad that her weight is a source of worry for her at all, but considering the enormous pressure that exists for actresses to be teeny tiny, as well as all the completely fucked up things people have written, and continue to write, about her, I think she’s doing pretty well.
