Flip through any fashion magazine and you’ll see an extremely narrow representation of female bodies–either the models are a “straight-sized” 0-2, or a “plus-sized” 12-16. I’m not great at math, but I’m pretty sure that leaves out a whole lot of numbers and wide variety of body types and sizes.

Fashionista is reporting that former Ford agents Gary Dakin and Jaclyn Sarka have launched a New York-based modeling agency called Jag, which will represent women of all sizes, instead of simply showcasing women in two rather arbitrary categories.

I’m tired of seeing magazines with stick thin girls juxtaposed with the token curvy model. I want to see a wide range of bodies represented, and it seems like Jag is a good step forward. What’s particularly exciting about this new venture is the commitment to bringing women of all sizes into mass media. As Dakin says,

“We are the first agency in New York that’s dedicated solely to women of all sizes. The goal is putting girls of all sizes on the covers of magazines, in advertising, and not stopping.”

According to Fashionista, Jag is currently representing about 30 models, including Jennie Runk, of the stunning H&M swimsuit campaign that made headlines a few months ago.

It’s worth noting that while obviously Jag’s mission is commendable, it’s 2013 and I can’t believe this is a thing. Women of all sizes wear clothes. It’s patently absurd that until now, the only models for our clothing fit into two very narrowly-defined groups, when the audience is scores of unique women with different body sizes and shapes.

At the end of the day, the overwhelming majority of models are tall, slender, Caucasian, and fully able-bodied. While Jag is a good first step, I look forward to a day when the full range of humans are represented in the fashion world.
