It must be awkward to be a fashion house that isn’t Chanel. I mean, between they’re continued partnership with coolest-model-alive Cara Delevingne and they’re ability to turn their iconic handbags into eye makeup, it just seems like they always come out on top. Now, they’ve added Willow Smith to their ever-expanding empire, and we couldn’t be more excited.
According to Teen Vogue, Chanel announced at its Fall 2016 runway show at Paris Fashion Week that Willow would be its newest brand ambassador, joining the ranks of Kristen Stewart, Lily-Rose Depp, and Blake Lively. Backstage at her first-ever Chanel show, she told the mag,
“Sitting in the chairs and just watching the clothes walk by is so amazing because you get to see the soul that’s inside of them. I feel like there is so much creativity going on that I want to inject some of my ideas and some of my energy into the brand, because I feel like there’s a lot of things that come from youth nowadays that need to be expressed and amplified to the world.”
As someone who seems to thrive off of creativity (and that’s putting it lightly—anyone else remember the glory that was the Willow and Jaden Smith poetry generator?), this new role is perfect for her. It’d definitely be interesting to see how the 15-year-old interprets Chanel’s classic styles and puts her own unique spin on them, and, in turn, the brand as a whole.
In addition to this photos posted on Chanel’s official Instagram, captioned simply with all of the necessary, buzzy hashtags, Willow posted a photo of her own:
The caption reads,
“<@chanelofficial> // Thank you Karl Lagerfeld and the entire team at Chanel for expanding the perceptions of “beauty” by picking me to be the new Chanel ambassador. I am honored.”
Willow is the first woman of color to serve as the face of the French fashion house, which, from her comment, is clearly not lost on her, and mustn’t be lost on any of us, either.
It was only a matter of time until Willow landed something major like this Chanel ambassadorship. After signing with The Society Management in September 2015 and landing Marc Jacobs‘ Fall/Winter 2015 campaign alongside Cher and Winona Ryder, Willow has proved that she’s got some serious high-fashion modeling chops. We can’t wait to see what she and Chanel put out first.
