If you’re not the kind of cool, laid-back bride who wants to get married in an Etsy dress or a Topshop frock she’s owned since 1997, looking for a wedding dress can be a disheartening experience. Wedding dresses are way more expensive than prom dresses or even other evening gowns, and a designer name adds a couple zeros to your price tag. On top of all that, finding a flattering, fashion-forward dress in larger sizes can be downright impossible in a sea of strapless ball gowns and butt bows. But now a lot of brides will have more options, because beloved red carpet designer Zac Posen has created a line of budget wedding dresses for David’s Bridal that are available in sizes from 0 to 26.
OK, the prices are “accessible” for wedding dresses, which means they range in price from $850 to $1,350. That’s admittedly a huge chunk of money, but it’s a fraction of what one would normally spend on a Zac Posen gown like the ones worn on the red carpet by Christina Hendricks and Lena Dunham, and a pittance compared with what a designer wedding dress runs in a store.
“I had been waiting on the right opportunity to design bridal for a larger audience,” said Posen to the NY Daily News.
The dresses have a lot of Posen’s signature elements, like visible corsetry and outsized mermaid silhouettes. Vogue UK has the pictures, and there’s a definite Old Hollywood, Charles James-esque vibe to them. They’re dramatic gowns for sure, but that’s refreshing when the market is a sea of demure princess dresses. A couple of the bridesmaid dresses would actually make pretty decent cocktail attire and might actually be the legendary dress a bridesmaid will actually wear again.
Posen’s bridal collection goes on sale on February 6 in David’s Bridal stores and online at Davidsbridal.com.
