Defying trend norms, looking amazing in brights and having awesome friends who clearly care about her wardrobe — these are all steps of Zoe Saldana‘s masterplan to dominate every red carpet ever. No, but really: girl looks great in everything. Her style for the LACMA 2013 Art + Film Gala red carpet this weekend was no exception.
Zoe wore a dramatic, custom Gucci gown featuring sheer mesh contouring panels all the way down her sides. She accessorized the dress with Gucci jewelry, a black clutch and a lovely pair of sandals. Beauty-wise, she went with loose tendrils of her glossy hair, a simple black smoky eye, and glowing, dewy skin.
The dress reminds me a bit of the full-length peplum dress with sheer sides that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the Iron Man 3 premiere earlier this year. Personally, I hated that dress primarily due to the colors and the out-of-place peplum, but I would be lying if I said I hadn’t thought those side panels were awful at the time. For some reason, though, I actually dig Saldana’s dress considerably more; perhaps it’s the lack of peplum or the gorgeous flashes of emerald on the dress, but I definitely find it the more appealing choice. I also think the “illusion” fabric portions themselves are more flatteringly shaped than Gwyneth’s, which looked like a lava lamp.
That said, I personally prefer Zoe’s A+ casual style or the crop top look I mentioned above to this type of gown. This dress may actually be terrible, but hair looks impossibly shiny, so my vision is probably just blinded by the glare from her perfect freaking mane. And while I don’t hate this illusion dress, even though most are pretty awful, anything that gives me the opportunity to use this GIF is a-okay in my book:
