If you are Derek Zoolander, the biggest male model in the (fictional) world, and you have a highly anticipated sequel coming out in a few days, are you just going to have a regular movie premiere like everyone else? That would be a no. The Zoolander 2 world premiere went down in New York City last night, and they did it in style by turning the premiere into a massive runway show.
The premiere took place at Lincoln Center, the former home to New York Fashion Week. The fashion show thankfully did not have the same DJ from Mugatu‘s Derelicte show in charge of the music; Skrillex was the DJ for the evening (however, the evil DJ was there on the runway). Fashionista reported that models walked the
red bright purple carpet in a number of different spring looks from designers who are featured in Zoolander 2. The list included Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, and Tommy Hilfiger.
As for the models, these weren’t some random models found at Balls Models. The Zoolander 2 fashion show had some of the biggest names in fashion including Taylor Hill, Stella Maxwell, Liu Wen, Irina Shayk, and Gigi Hadid. Cara Delevingne sadly wasn’t there, but she has already had a walk-off with Derek, and we know that one walk-off battle is enough.
Of course, the cast of the film all strutted their stuff on the runway in character too. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Penelope Cruz, and Justin Theroux all showed off their best Blue Steels as they worked the runway. (They did later change to walk the red carpet as themselves.)
It’s not even officially NYFW yet, but this is the best start to the shows that anyone could have asked for. Forget about quirky venues or choreographed dance numbers, you cannot get better than a Derek Zoolander fashion show. Furthermore, it makes total sense for the world premiere of Zoolander 2 to have a fashion show. Remember that Derek Zoolander and Hansel made the announcement about the sequel by walking in the Valentino show at Paris Fashion Week?
It’s been months of amazing Zoolander 2 promos. Derek finally scored his first Vogue cover alongside Penelope Cruz and he gave the best responses to the magazine’s 73 Questions. We also cannot forget about his collaboration with Kiehl’s or the fact that Derek and Hansel were finally the ones to make Anna Wintour crack a tiny smile. There’s a couple of days until the movie comes out, so do not expect the stunts to be over yet. And fingers crossed that they have saved the really, really ridiculously good ones for the actual fim.
