There are no shortages of good places to buy makeup, from the drugstore to Sephora to the Chanel counter. But sticking to the big purveyors means you’re missing out, because some of the best products are from indie makeup brands you’ve probably never heard of. If you’re looking to expand your collection but the usual suspects aren’t doing it for you, check out these eyeshadows for some heavily pigmented magic.

1. Goldilux by Sugarpill, $12

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 20.17.55Do you need a metallic gold eyeshadow? I have it on good authority that you can do no better than Sugarpill’s hyper-pigmented Goldilux. You can use it as an eyeshadow or a liner, and it is gold enough to actually show up on your face.

2. Vintage matte eye shadow by Blackbird Cosmetics, $6

il_570xN.655969958_q70eBlackbird’s matte eye shadows get raves for their intense, heavily pigmented colors, which last all day without creasing, even on oily skin. This mid-toned purple is excellent on many skin tones, and be sure to check out the rest of the range as well.

3. J.K. Meowling by Hello Waffle Cosmetics

4. Faux Pas by Darling Girl Cosmetics, $2.50-5.90

fauxpas604This is a gorgeous dusty lavender that flashes bright blue. The color is stunning, and these shadows are famous for wearing long and hard and staying just where you want them.

5. Candied Apple by Femme Fatale, $6.50

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 20.48.34Femme Fatale is an Australian indie label, and it’s hard to describe what this color even looks like. It’s a reddish pink, but with some green, and that makes it look almost brown … it’s a chameleon. But if you look at what some beauty bloggers are doing with it, you’ll see why it’s on this list.

6. Nic Cage Raking Leaves on a Brisk October Afternoon by Shiro Cosmetics, $6.50

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 20.56.51Shiro’s well-regarded line of cosmetics is of excellent quality, and the colors are so good it was hard to choose one to feature until I saw the names. There was no way a shadow called “Nic Cage Raking Leaves on a Brisk October Afternoon” was not getting added, and the fact that it is a gorgeous coffee brown with red and gold shimmer is just a bonus.

7. Nymph by Detrivore Cosmetics, $6

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 21.04.09Marsala, Pantone’s color of the year, is a brick red that is excellent for beauty products and bears a striking similarity to this ultra matte eye shadow by Detrivore.

8. Brisket by My Pretty Zombie, $5

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 21.20.15This coppery red-gold is part of My Pretty Zombie’s Butcher Shop collection, and it’s heavily pigmented without looking too chalky, and that color is perfect for the holidays.

9. Ochre by My Beauty Addiction, $5

Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 21.25.14Having trouble finding a gold that isn’t shiny? This one is basically a neutral, but not boring. The mineral formula behind My Beauty Addiction’s shadows means they actually stick well to your skin and will stay put all day. Make sure to check out the rest of their colors as well.
