WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD? How can judges still not understand that rape is not the product of women feeling guilty the next morning and deciding to go ruin a man’s life? How can it be okay for Superior Court Judge Derek Johnson to make rulings when he seemingly does not understand how rape works?
I am calming down, and taking a step back.
What happened is that a woman’s boyfriend – who had previously been convicted of stalking and domestic battery – threatened to mutilate her vagina with a screwdriver he’d heated up if she didn’t have sex with him. She did have sex with him.
Johnson denied the prosecutor’s call to impose a 16 year sentence upon the man, and instead opted for a 6 year sentence saying:
“I’m not a gynecologist, but I can tell you something,” the judge said, according to documents released Thursday. “If someone doesn’t want to have sexual intercourse, the body shuts down. The body will not permit that to happen unless a lot of damage in inflicted, and we heard nothing about that in this case. That tells me that the victim in this case, although she wasn’t necessarily willing, she didn’t put up a fight.”
Good lord. If someone who had attacked me in the past was brandishing a burning screwdriver in the direction of my vagina neither would I.
That is still not a cool way to get girls to sleep with you.
I bet if a bigger, stronger man – with a history of violence – were hovering over Judge Derek Johnson threatening to stab his penis with a screwdriver unless he put out, Derek Johnson would go along with it, too. And it would be awful. It would be violating, and scary, and awful.
I haven’t heard anything this ridiculous since… well since Todd Akin spoke earlier this year about “legitimate rape victims” not being able to become pregnant because the uterus has ways of shutting the whole thing down.
I keep feeling that these men have made it very far into public life without having the least understanding of the fact that bodies do not work the way you want them to work all the time. Their mentality seems to be like saying “well, if someone doesn’t want to be overweight, their body just makes them thin.” No. No, that is not how things work. That is not the way the world works, alas.
