Los Angeles premiere of 'Identity Thief'

Sometimes, when I see things in the news like the New York Observer movie critic Rex Reed calling an Melissa McCarthy a hippo when reviewing her upcoming movie, Identity Thief, I think to myself “well, he’s probably very old.” But then I realize that there was never a time period in history where it was appropriate to insult the body type of an actress when that had no relation to the role at hand. It’s mean, it’s inappropriate, and it’s bad journalism.

Just so we’re clear on exactly how, Rex introduces “cacophonous, tractor-sized Melissa McCarthy” and then writes:

The snafus in the worst road movie since The Guilt Trip plunge Mr. Bateman and his female hippo into a motel with only a double bed, a grotesque sex scene with a pickled reprobate she picks up in a bar who demands a threesome, a violent bar fight that bloodies his nose, a kidnapping, a multi-car collision going the wrong way on the freeway … but why go on?… By the time they got lost in the woods and fall into a den of hissing snakes, Elvis has long since left the building. Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) is a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success. Poor Jason Bateman.

Just so we’re clear, this is terrible. All of this is terrible. If you are reviewing movies, please do not do this. Good talk.
