We’ve had a great start to the new year here at the Merry Royals blog. Our favorite people have been busy with their official engagements and private affairs. Here are the news we covered this past month:
New Year Celebrations
Britain’s Monarchy announced that, this year, The Queen will visit the Netherlands, Uganda and the United States. Queen Elizabeth celebrated the centenary of the King Edward VII High School in King’s Lynn. Prince Philip was inducted into the Equestrian Hall of Fame.
The Princess Royal visited the Falkland Islands, Antarctica (including the British Antarctic Scientific Base) and Chile. The Countess of Wessex had an official visit to Berkshire. The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, was in the football club West Ham in Upton Park this month.
It was revealed that Prince Charles and Camilla will not be attending the memorial concert for Diana. Prince Charles advocacy for the environment were evidenced in new Eco Homes at Poundbury and his cancellation of an annual ski trip to Klosters, Switzerland. Camilla’s first public appearance of the year was in Aberdeen, Scotland. Late this month, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall spent a weekend in the U.S., where they toured Philadelphia and attended the Academy of Music’s 150th anniversary gala. At the formal affair, Camilla wore a dazzling piece of new jewelry. The couple also went to New York where Prince Charles received an environmental award.
Prince William’s love of speed and ongoing military training put him in the news. The young prince added to his royal duties with a Vice Royal Patronage to the Welsh Rugby Union. Talks of an engagement between him and Kate Middleton are still circulating, with an offer for them to have the event on a racecourse. Whether or not they will get engaged this year, some lucky girl might still be getting an engagement ring with a rare blue sapphire. While waiting for the announcement, we can laugh at this humorous timeline of the lovely couple’s relationship.
Prince Harry started the year with a resolution to quit smoking. He and girlfriend Chelsy Davy were reunited briefly in London, during which Prince Harry protected Chelsy from paparazzi. The couple had some late nights at their favorite clubs, which supposedly caused Prince Harry to miss a training march. Chelsy choice of a TopShop dress during her visit gave the shop another endorsements from a royal sweetheart.
In other British royal news, historical heirs to the English throne can have their claim to fame if they are able to document their lineages.
The Spanish royal family led the Pascua Militar Celebrations, according to tradition. The Prince of Asturias, Prince Felipe, was in Nicaragua for an official visit. In a different event, we got a glimpse of his wife Princess Letizia, who is now 5-months Pregnant.
At the start of the new year, the Danish Royals met with military personnel and patronages in an official reception. Denmark’s Prince Frederik indulged his love of sailing by joining the Key West Regatta.
We extended our birthday greetings to the following this month:
Spain’s King Juan Carlos, January 5
Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton, January 9
Sweden’s Princess Birgitta, January 19

Other Royal Families

Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit participated in the NHO Conference. Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended their first public movie premiere, “I’ll Never Forget You”. We got a sampling of royal poetry from the Emperor and other members of his family.
Not So Merry Royals
Occasionally, we get news of not so merry events that happen in the lives of the royal families. This month, an electrical problem resulted in a minor fire at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scottish residence of Queen Elizabeth. In truly not very merry news, Belgium’s Prince Laurent testified in a fraud case and was later ordered to pay back some funds because of his involvement in the case.
