Catarina Migliorini, a 20-year-old Brazilian woman, is currently auctioning off her virginity online. Using the website Virgins Wanted, created by filmmaker Justin Sisely who will be documenting the whole experience, Catarina plans on selling her virginity to the highest bidder and having sex with them on a plane in order to avoid prostitution laws. While this is by no means the first time a person’s virginity has been auctioned, it is unique because of it will be documented as well as because of what the woman intends on doing with the money.

Catarina plans on donating a lot of the money to her native Santa Catarina in order to build housing for the poor. And that is starting to look like it’s going to be a huge chunk of cash: not only is she getting $20,000 to participate in the documentary, she’ll also receive 90% of the auction price. This will be $164,000 total in the event that Jack Miller, the current bid holder, wins the auction ending on October 15th at $160,000.

The highest bid for the other virgin participant, a young man named Alexander Stepanov, is currently at $1,300. From what I can gather in the trailer, he is doing this to allow himself to pursue a career while also financially taking care of his sick mother. As a side note: I went searching for more information on Alexander and it was quite difficult to find, which I think is partially due to the fact that the world doesn’t really see male virginity loss as a controversial deal. Despite both participants being over eighteen, there seems to be a lot more debate as to the morality of Catarina’s choice.

According to Catarina, she does not consider herself a prostitute: “For me, it’s not prostitution. When someone does something once in his or her life, this is not considered a profession. If you take a picture and it comes out good, you are not a photographer because of it.”

Anyway, while I’m not all about the whole “losing your virginity needs to be special/sacred/perfect” thing — I believe it should be pleasant and consensual and that’s where my standards end — I can’t help but wonder how it would feel to have lost your virginity on a plane with a total stranger. My main concern is the treatment of the both Alexander and Catarina and that all parties take necessary precautions by testing for STDs, using proper birth control and doing background checks on the bidders, which it appears they will be doing.

I also think it’s a little strange that the website also states that “the female virgin will undergo a medical examination by an accredited gynecologist and provide the winning bidder with medical evidence of her virginity. The virgin must provide a document from the gynecologist that certifies her claim to virginity.” Er, considering masturbation, injury, exercise and illness can all break your hymen, how exactly will this be proven?

Plus, losing your virginity is awkward enough. But on a plane? It’s causing me want to make a joke about overhead compartments and turbulence and other awkward airplane stuff (as Jezebel put it, “After that’s done do you have to next to each other and eat little packs of pretzels and half-watch ubiquitous in-flight movie P.S. I Love You?”). But I’ll just leave it at this: her body is her body. It’s hers to do what she wants with and the same goes for Alexander. As long as they weren’t coerced into this, I don’t have a problem with it, but I’ll reserve my judgment for when more information comes out about Virgins Wanted.
