While being interviewed on Conan for her new movie The To-Do ListAubrey Plaza admitted that the masturbation scene she did for it was not simulated. Translation: lady went on set in front of a ton of people (including “old men smoking”) with a camera above the bed, laid down and had to masturbate “like it says in the script.” Second translation: The To-Do List just pre-sold so many tickets.

Now, as open as I am about many, many things, I am definitely shy when it comes to, say, masturbating on camera in a room full of other human beings. That is, I would never do it because it sounds terrifying.

There are different levels of actors in my eyes: there’s the Judy Dench and Patrick Stewart and the Kate Winslet crowd of the world, but there’s also the Selena Gomez and Jessica Biel and Justin Bieber as Justin Bieber sect, and many others in between. When people from the first group say that “acting is hard,” I believe that they know because they commit, actually attempt to do well at it and indeed succeed via countless attempts; when the latter says “acting is hard,” I believe them because I believe everything relating to believability (Beliebability?) is probably hard for them, and because it is hard to do something you suck at. But masturbating on camera in a room full of people for the sake of your film? Aubrey Plaza totally just joined the ranks of the people allowed to say “acting is hard” because she seems truly committed. Go you, Plaza.
