I love Britney Spears. I really do. Her new song “Perfume” is THE JAM, she’s a fellow Sagittarius, she’s resilient and hey, there’s just something really likable about her. But damn, girl really needs to brush up on her media training so she doesn’t say inadvertently racist things while promoting her new album.
In an interview with Univision, Britney said of the Latino community:
“I think it’s very sexy. I’ve always loved Latinos. They make me think of a bad boy type that your father wouldn’t let you go out with.”
Oh god. I don’t know if Britney’s ever dated a Latino man, but come on. This is 2013. The whole “Latin lover” thing is tired, outdated and clearly a stereotype. Not all Spanish-speaking men (or, for that matter, men of Latino/Hispanic origin) are bad boys, Brit! I guess I really shouldn’t expect Britney to be at all culturally-sensitive, but I mean, she’s an adult woman. She should know not not to rely on tropes like “Latin men are sexy and spicy!” when talking to a television channel geared towards Latinos.
But sadly, I guess I she actually doesn’t know better. This isn’t the first time Brit-Brit’s said eyebrow-raising comments during her latest media tour. Remember how she said she thinks gay people are “somewhat girls?” And gave terrible relationship advice on Ryan Seacrest‘s radio show? Honestly, every time she says something, it just makes me sad to think about the kind of life she leads, the way she raised, and how little she must understand about the real world and the way it works. I guess it’s a good thing she’s rich?
You can watch her whole interview here, if you also want to see her mimic her interviewer’s accent and speak in pretend gibberish Spanish:
