If you’ve ever been dumped, you likely know the searing pain that such an experience brings — the feeling of hurt manifested in what seems to be a physical way.

Well, here’s a little good news for you: you’re not crazy. And in fact, you likely did go through something akin to physical pain after your lovah left, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Michigan.

In the study, which was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, experts looked at the brains of people who had recently been left by their partners. They found that the neurological areas that were activated when participants looked at pictures of their former flames and reminisced about their relationship were the same as those that lit up when the participants experienced heat akin to holding a hot cup of coffee.

In other words, burned, indeed.
