50 shades of grey domestic abuse

For heaven’s sakes. I don’t like Fifty Shades of Grey because I think it is a very, very badly written book, but this domestic abuse charity seems to be taking a very strong line on it. And by a “strong line” I mean “this is ridiculous.”

According to the BBC:

The charity, based in Washington, originally planned to burn the donated books on a bonfire.

Ms Phillipson said: “There were a range options. We discussed the book burning while getting the message across that this book is a dangerous trend. I think we’ve got a culture now which has completely sexualised women and in which women feel obligated to take part in that culture. We want to draw a line under that. We will be cutting them up, using them for toilet roll and sticking them on our compost heap and they will go back into the ground… although the ideas they represent will continue.”

Just so we’re clear: the weird, awkward seeming sex featured in Fifty Shades of Grey, complete with drawn out contracts and abbreviation-rich text messages sounds… awful to me. Just awful. It sounds as sexy as pus on a bagel. It’s also entirely consensual. Hence all those elaborate discussions and hilarious contracts.

Comparing the two minimizes the difficulties of people who are actually living in abusive situations. This is idiotic. Also, book burning is dumb. Stop being dumb, well meaning people.
