Kevin Clash, who plays Elmo on Sesame Street, is accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage boy. But… Elmo is adorable.
I feel like we find out disquieting facts about people who have integrated themselves into children’s communities all the time. Like, when Pee Wee Herman was found masturbating in public (though, to be fair, he was in a porn theater, and that’s kind of what you’re supposed to do in a porn theater). John Wayne Gacy was a clown at children’s birthday parties. Richard Bacon was fired from his children’s television show after a drug scandal.
I don’t care it’s still upsetting.
According to The Daily Mail:
The man who voices the puppet of Elmo on Sesame Street has taken leave amid allegations he had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old boy.
Kevin Clash, 52, has taken a leave of absence from the popular children’s show after the programme’s lawyers were contacted by a 23-year-old man who claims he had a sexual relationship with the puppeteer seven years ago, when he was aged 16.
Now, to be fair, I think we can breath some sort of sigh of relief that the man in question was 16 and not 6, so, this could have been worse. But still. Though the puppeteer is defending his reputation claiming:
It is unclear why Mr Clash wanted a leave of absence, since he denies the allegations of underage sex, but the programme told TMZ it was to allow him to defend his reputation in the wake of the damaging allegations.
Let’s all just be glad this happened after the election so Mitt Romney didn’t have a real reason to shut down Sesame Street.
