supreme court justice wedding michael kaiser john roberts

You guys are about to have the best wedding ever.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is just the best person ever. In addition to advancing women’s rights throughout her long career, she is about to become the first Supreme Court Justice to officiate at the wedding of a same-sex couple.

One of the lucky grooms is Ginsberg’s good friend, Kennedy Center President Michael M. Kaiser, who will be marrying economist John Roberts at the Kennedy Center atrium tonight in front of 220 surely glamorous and wonderful guests. (Renee Fleming and Barbara Cook are among the attending.) Does anybody need a +1? I have a fancy dress and can do my makeup in the car.

Ginsburg herself seems pretty excited about the prospect of officiating at the wedding.

“I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship,” she said. This is the first same-sex wedding officiated by a Supreme Court Justice, but Ginsburg went all Yoda-like in her statement Friday, saying, “It won’t be long before there is another.”

That one will probably also be performed by Ginsburg, who agreed to marry another same-sex couple next month.

“It’s very meaningful mostly to have a friend officiate, and then for someone of her stature, it’s a very big honor,” Kaiser said to the Associated Press. “I think that everything that’s going on that makes same-sex marriage possible and visible helps to encourage others and to make the issue seem less of an issue, to make it just more part of life.”

Congratulations, you guys. You are about to have the best wedding ever.
