You know, it’s often astonishing to me how, in the course of my lifetime, so many people have completely evolved regarding their views on gay marriage. I remember being a pre-teen and plenty of people in my hometown thinking that the idea was pretty controversial. Now, I feel like I go back there and everyone is all, “Yay, more weddings! But also, their color scheme is a little bit much, no?” Because people in my hometown will say that about any color scheme but beige.

It’s not that they’re politely pretending, it’s just that, you know, they had 15 years for their views to evolve and realized that consenting adults being in love and wanting to start families was not the biggest problem facing the nation.

So, lots of people did that, and then there’s Mike Huckabee, who said on Fox that:

“If we’re determined to change the definition of marriage to accommodate how people feel and what they wish to do because of their mutual consent, then we should immediately release those incarcerated for practicing polygamy or bigamy. And, frankly, let’s make all consensual adult behaviors legal, whether prostitution, assisted suicide, or even drinking 16 ounce sodas in New York City.”

I’m actually… fine with all of that. I am fine with every single thing on that list. I think many people can see why legalizing prostitution would mean that sex workers would have better legal protection in place, and I think a lot of people who have watched a loved one suffer from a terminal illness – or can imagine doing so – can understand why someone in great pain might opt for assisted suicide.

So, I don’t think Huckabee is making the best argument here. Maybe go back to, “Next we’ll have people marrying dogs and dogs marrying hamburgers?” I think that was an argument for a while, though it always seemed like a bit much.
