huma abedin

Look, I’m not sure I understand Huma Abedin‘s loyalty to Anthony Weiner. If you were a beautiful, young woman, and you had a politico spouse who, after causing a public scandal by sending pictures of his penis to women, continued to do so, under the pseudonym Carlos Danger, wouldn’t it be logical to leave him? I don’t think anyone would fault Huma if she decided that maybe this relationship was less than ideal.

The New York Times talked to a variety of women about Huma’s loyalty and most of them said that they were… baffled, pretty much. Meanwhile, Gloria Steinem claimed:

I have no way of knowing whether Huma, for whom I have great respect, is responding out of new motherhood, the Stockholm syndrome or a mystery,” Gloria Steinem, the feminist activist, wrote in an e-mail.

“I strongly object to holding one spouse responsible for the other’s acts,” added Ms. Steinem, who has endorsed Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker, in the mayoral race. “He’s the one who should get out of the race.”

You know, it is possible that they just have an open policy about this. Weiner might just like to send pictures of his genitals to strangers, and Huma could also be sending pictures of her genitals to strangers (and it just hasn’t come out in public yet). It’s possible that, as a couple, they are perfectly happy in ways that just seem surprising to the rest of us. But if that’s the case, maybe it would be better to say that than to keep insisting that Weiner’s a changed man.
