Katelyn-Campbell

Remember that awful abstinence lady religious organizations paid to go to a school in West Virginia and yell lies at kids like “all sexual contact leads to STDs” and “if you take birth control, your mother probably hates you”? Well, one brave student at that school has been speaking out against her slut-shaming ways, despite alleged threats from her principal.

Student body president Katelyn Campbell has filed an injunction against her school’s principal after he threatened to punish her for speaking out about how speaker Pam Stenzel, and abstinence-only education in general, is damaging to teens and ineffective at preventing teen pregnancy. Specifically, she spoke to several news outlets about what she felt was an abusive act on the school’s part. The injunction is to keep the principal for punishing her for exercising her right to freedom of speech.

According to The West Virginia Gazette, Campbell gave a news conference on Monday where she repudiated the blatantly mis-informative, “slut-shaming” assembly, and called for Principal George Aulenbacher to apologize and resign, as he “knowingly psychologically abused students” by having the assembly. “West Virginia has the ninth highest pregnancy rate in the U.S.,” she said. “I should be able to be informed in my school what birth control is and how I can get it. With the policy at GW, under George Aulenbacher, information about birth control and sex education has been suppressed. Our nurse wasn’t allowed to talk about where you can get birth control for free in the city of Charleston.”

According to Campbell’s complaint, the principal called her into his office once he found out she’d spoken to news outlets about the assembly and threatened to call Wellesley, the college where she’d been accepted, to try to get her kicked out, saying, “How would you feel if I called your college and told them what bad character you have and what a backstabber you are?” “I said, ‘Go ahead,'” said Campbell. “He continued to berate me in his office. I’m not an emotional person, but I cried. He threatened me and my future in order to put forth his own personal agenda and made teachers and students feel they cant speak up because of fear of retaliation.”

How awesome is this girl? In a world where teenagers have pretty much zero power over their education and their very bodily autonomy, she is speaking truth to power and fucking winning. Make no mistake about it: a religiously motivated, lie-spewing, slut-shaming speaker like Stenzel has no place in a public school’s curriculum, whether the school used state money to pay for her or not. I don’t know if the principal should have to resign over it, but if he threatened a student for speaking out, that does seem like grounds for resignation. Maybe this public slut-shaming-shaming wil be a step in the right direction for a state whose superstitiously motivated anti-education has led it to have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country.

For her part, Katelyn shouldn’t be too worried about her future. Wellesley, a women’s college with a reputation for feminism and progressivism, has reassured her via Twitter that it will welcome her with open arms this coming fall:
