twin-serial-rapist

There are some stories out there that really are just too bizarre to be true, and this one out of France is way the hell up there: a set of 24-year-old identical twin men, Elwin and Yohan, have been arrested for six different rapes on women between 22 and 76 occurring since September 2012. But because of the nature of identical twin DNA, prosecutors cannot move forward until they know which brother committed the rapes.

There’s absolutely no shortage of evidence here: CCTV footage caught the assailant on video. A victim identified one of them as her attacker. They have plenty of DNA from the assaults, but there is no way to tell who committed the rapes using a normal DNA test. In fact, the only way to tell which brother is the serial rapist — or, indeed, if both are — is by using a test that costs over 1 million euros. The test would be an ultra-sophisticated one which looks at billions of base pairs as opposed to normal ones, which look at around 400.

As Laura Beck points out, this is a Law & Order: SVU episode waiting to happen (seriously, I guarantee it will be on there within the year). And I think the saddest thing about this horrible sequence of events is that these six women may never get justice because the testing is simply too expensive for the government to provide (though you really think they might be willing to shell out a little bit to catch a guy who brutally raped six women in just a matter of five months). Also, I find it sad that if only one men is the assailant, that the other is refusing to cooperate with police. Hopefully, though, the government will somehow find a way to close this ridiculously crazy twin serial rapist CSI shit before the men are released and able to strike again.
