Whitney Thompson–winner of America’s Next Top Model, “cycle” 10–was the show’s first plus size champ. She’s also the first alum to transition into… online dating? Thompson is launching a dating site for plus women this week, called The Big and the Beautiful. Thompson got the idea after becoming fed up with her own struggles to find a date online. She says:
“[When] I would [call myself] a ‘plus-sized model’ . . . guys would expect me to be a really big girl. But if I said, ‘I’m a model,’ [they were] disappointed that I’m bigger. Either way, I wasn’t what the guy was looking for.”
Thompson has basically articulated the problem with the word “plus,” as it appears in modeling, fashion, and real life: it doesn’t mean anything. When we start using “plus” for anything over a size 4, we get a word without any meaningful definition real fast.
Anyway, members pay $40 a month and can choose to describe what they want as more of a relationship or a hook-up. To which Thompson adds, “Curvy girls like sex, too.”
Do you think a dating site for sizes [X] and up is a good idea?
