We have bitched and moaned about peplums for nearly as long as we’ve been doing red carpet coverage–they bother us for a number of reasons, namely that they tend to be awkward, bulky and unflattering on women in the actual corporeal world (as opposed to the fantastical creatures forged at fashion week and paraded down the runway) and because they look so pointless. Just a bunch of unnecessary fabric, engulfing the wearer, serving no visual purpose. No wonder Kim Kardashian loves them.
…But looks like we better start loving them too, because if the current NYFW runways are any indication, they’re not going away anytime soon. Here’s what to expect from the trend next Spring. More
Last night, Target unveiled its latest design collaboration: 3.1 Phillip Lim. Lim himself was there (looking stylish in black), as were a few models and a whole lot of clothes: while staying true to the designer’s polished aesthetic, the collection features leopard prints, bright florals, sophisticated basics and lots and lot of accessories. Yes, there are handbags.
The collection isn’t available until next month, but take a look at our gallery and figure out which pieces you’ll be gunning for September 15. More
The other big news is he’s set to design womenswear as well as pieces for dudes. More
Shirt dresses are comfortable, work-appropriate and (at their best) effortlessly chic. Although finding the perfect version can be a challenge–they look super dowdy if the fit is off–once you’ve located the ideal style for your figure, you’ll discover the demure, dependable shirt dress is actually one of those pieces you can live in. Happy hunting. More
We’ve recently experienced a pretty intense heatwave and, unfortunately, most days you can’t just sit in a kitchen with your head in the freezer. For a lot of New Yorkers, going to work means time spent in punishing heat on subway platforms and suffocating under BO on trains. Thus, staying stylish–while forgoing obvious hot weather staples like tanks and shorts–is a challenge. In response to all this sweating of late, we’ve put together a shopping guide of ways to beat the heat while staying pulled together. More
I’ve never been to a garden party but I figure, if you were to attend one, you’d need a light, white (maybe eyelet?) dress and a soft, featherweight cardigan. So, for those of you who can handle (maybe even enjoy) direct sunlight, here are some light Spring-appropriate cardigans, perfect for warming weather that hasn’t yet begun to swelter. More
I was a diehard romper hater for years. Then I tried one on and couldn’t believe how flattering they were. That said, fit is crucial… unless you want to end up looking like a little kid (and I still kind of cringe when boutiques refer to them as “playsuits”). Anyway, if you’re a romper holdout, I respect that. But if you’ve always been a fan (or crossed over, like me) here’s a bunch of rompers fit for many occasions involving Spring. More
Leather was all over the Fall 2011 runways this NYFW, but not in its typical outerwear/tough girl trousers incarnation. Instead, leather pieces were shown in an enormous variety: ladylike dresses, pencil skirts, and effortless tanks. After you’re done checking out the gallery and have (hopefully) gotten some good styling ideas, head over to Jennifer‘s round up of leather dresses (that won’t make you look like a biker). More
Last night, I had a discussion with a colleague about the rise of the private online sale – it seems that it came out of nowhere and now is what a lot of us fashionistas (or recessionistas, as the case … More
