We give Vogue a lot of trouble for over-zealous retouching, so ordinarily when we say a new cover “looks like a painting,” we don’t mean it in a positive way.

Despite the fact that she’s widely loved as an actress–and lauded as a crusader for more positive body image–there’s been a hefty internet-wide backlash to Kate Winslet‘s recently-dropped Vogue cover. Of course, the problem has nothing to do with Winslet herself… and everything to do with Vogue‘s over-eager retouchers.

Lady Gaga let the cat out of the bag on Twitter: she’s American Vogue‘s September covergirl. Yes, the all-important September issue is refreshingly offbeat this year and Gaga looks great in a fried lion’s mane and that striking Marc Jacobs gown. She was shot by powerhouse duo Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott and styled by Grace Coddington (of course). The cover story is already up online, too, so it looks like this was a coordinated leak. More
