The world was recently gifted a new accidentally disturbing celebrity cake: the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, has been immortalized in frosting and fondant and… the results were predictably creepy. As these things often are.
This got us thinking: what other fashion icons have been made into cakes? And how creepy were the results?
The answer: many and very. More
Well, you can’t win them all. No matter what you do, there seems to be a 10% factor of those who are going to hate on you. Although fans of Amy Winehouse and Jean Paul Gaultier swooned over his gorgeous Spring 2012 Couture show in Paris this week because it was not only stunning but was devoted to the late singer, her family were none to pleased with his choice. For his Spring 2012 Couture show in Paris, Jean Paul Gaultier decided to devote much of his energy to creating a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. This inspiration is evident in the show’s hair, makeup, styling, and even many of the clothes; retro 60s beehives and winged eye liner abounded. Gaultier also put his own modern spin on Winehouse’s style with futuristic shapes and some very on-trend bright hair colors. “I think Amy Winehouse was truly a fashion icon,” Gaultier told WWD. He also said he “felt compelled to celebrate her style because magazines have failed to do so.” Click through for some of his most Winehouse-ian looks. More
Although we’ve speculated in the past that Amy Winehouse‘s fall 2011 collection was the last one she designed for Fred Perry, it turns out there’s one more. The British fashion house released 14 items from Winehouse’s spring 2012 collection for sale online today to coincide with with the release of her posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures. (The rest will be released closer to, you guessed it, spring 2012.) Much more colorful than the fall collection that came out shortly after her death, these pieces are inspired by “Amy’s love of 50s Americana and art deco Miami” and include lots of pinks, blues, and whimsical prints. The portion of the proceeds that would have gone to Amy will go instead to her posthumous foundation to help young people struggling with addiction. Out of respect for the recently dead, I will present the teaser collection sans my usual rough-and-tumble japery. More
You all know the backstory so let’s just stay succinct: Amy Winehouse was designing for sporty Brit label Fred Perry, Amy Winehouse passed away in July, this is probably the last collection to have had direct involvement with her. The label claims to have sought the blessing of the singer’s family before launching Fall, which is a lot more subdued compared to the previous season. The 27 piece collection is comprised mostly of gray and black. Here’s the lookbook. More
So, Amy Winehouse and Alexander McQueen had a rivalry going. They met at a party in 2006 and McQueen offended her somehow. Then she set a dress on fire. More
Some people find this a bit creepy, but I’m falling on the side of “touching gesture.” More
Amy Winehouse was found dead this past weekend and since then the internet has been a shitstorm of empathy, sanctimony, insensitivity and sadness. I’d rather not contribute to that. But here is a gallery of Amy Winehouse’s surprisingly far-reaching influence on fashion, featuring ad campaigns, runway looks and eds from Vogue Italia, Vogue Paris, Numero, and Love. More

Have you often thought to yourself, “I believe Amy Winehouse’s problems can really be traced back to the fact that people frequently took ugly photos of her?” More
Amy Winehouse died this weekend, and I was a sad to hear some people respond “yes, well, you just had to look at her to know that was coming.” I was sad not from a deep place of “you can’t know what someone is going through just by looking at them.” I was sad from a really shallow place because there were times when, before her battle with drugs, Amy Winehouse looked terrific. I hate to think that people will just remember her looking beat up and blistered. So. Here is Russell Brand’s tribute:
Some famous people today (not Lindsay Lohan) are known for their superb acting skills. Others, like Beyoncé, are famous for some seriously powerful vocal chords. Others, like Megan Fox, are known for being hot, having big lips and marrying strange men (Welcome back to the world, David Austen Green). But when it comes to fashion there is a long history of actors and actresses who are known for one particular trait or fashion choice. And every once in awhile, a celebrity becomes known for something that would be embarrassing on most normal size humans. More
