Okay, we promise this is our last 2011 round-up (it is, after all, 2012). We’ve already sifted through the best red carpet looks of last year, its most controversial advertisements, the best and worst dressed and the most annoying… now we must celebrate all of its best fashion models. This year saw Karlie Kloss shoot for the title of supermodel, Crystal Renn land her first (and much-deserved) Vogue cover, the startling debut of Saskia de Brauw, the rise of Arizona Muse, the continuing reign of Freja Beha Erichsen and the all-out domination of Andrej Pejic. Check out these and more of the year’s top models, then tell us your favorite. More

To be fair, it’s not really retro, but a shot of a very famous supermodel in the current Vogue Nippon… More
Last night, V Magazine feted their Carine Roitfeld-styled November covers with a splashy party in Midtown. Cover girls Joan Smalls (in maybe the best costume), Candice Swanepoel, Bambi Northwood-Blyth, Sui He, and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem all showed up, along with the man who lensed them (and the night’s co-host) Terry Richardson, who dressed as… a Rabbi. See loads of models (Abbey Lee! Crystal Renn! Toni Garrn!), designers (Richard Chai! Phillip Lim! Alber Elbaz!) and other industry shining stars in costume. More
On Monday, we asked some ladies what kind of plastic surgery they’d get. Responses varied, but a few expressed extreme disdain for the practice, even the word “immoral” was thrown around. Plenty of commenters cried foul but more than a few agreed that it was, indeed, immoral. Now Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Wright and Deputy Editor Ashley Cardiff must debate to the death. Loser has turkey neck forever. More
Two straight size models who went plus to massive success–Crystal Renn and Kate Dillon–have landed plus brand Marina Rinaldi’s fall campaign, lensed by Alexi Lubomirski. Italian Vogue hails Renn as a “symbol of the curvy revolution” in its coverage and mentions the controversy surrounding her “alleged” weight loss, which we think is a misuse of the word “alleged.” However, much as people like to harp on Renn for no longer really resembling the full-figured women she’s meant to represent, the fact remains that Crystal Renn does not look like a lot of her model counterparts and we’re always happy to see her. Check out Renn and Dillon (a new mom, no less) looking supremely tall and beautiful in the gallery ahead. More
Last week, Japanese Vogue editor-at-large Anna Dello Russo released a behind-the-scenes video featuring Crystal Renn prepping and posing for an upcoming editorial. The video mostly shows Renn modeling androgynous looks, but at one point she’s sitting in a makeup chair, … More
Yesterday, a video of Japanese Vogue editor Anna Dello Russo hit the internet, in which hr team gives top model Crystal Renn “squinty” eyes by taping them back. Some people found this offensive. More
The other day, I was going about my usual routine (scrolling through Fashion Gone Rogue and waiting breathlessly for the next major news story about bath salts to break). Anyway, I came upon an editorial starring Magdalena Frackowiack as a sultry nun in Dansk. So I says to myself, “Wow! A skinny white girl as a sexy nun? This is the most groundbreaking thing I have ever seen. I wish fashion would appropriate religious imagery more often because it’s really thought-provoking and bursting with exciting new ideas!” And then my heart was broken when I remembered this isn’t even the first time Magdalena Frockowiack was in a sexy nun editorial (that would be Pop‘s Nun Head from back in 2008). And then I remembered this trope has been run into the ground so deeply that sexy nuns are growing like pale, skinny flowers in China. Get ready. More
Recently, we spotted Lindsey Wixson in a Terry Richardon-shot editorial slurping some really gross-looking spaghetti. We (and a bunch of other blogs written by people with memories) pointed out that Richardson did the same with Crystal Renn in French Vogue. And then we realized “models eating pasta” is approaching editorial trope territory. I guess because it’s models! eating! pasta! It’s funny because it’s improbable! LOLOLOLOLOLOL More

Since plus-size models are in the news today, it seems like a good time to turn our attention toward Crystal Renn’s solo editorial in July’s Vogue Spain. Mark Seliger lensed Renn wearing looks from Gucci, L’Wren Scott, Prabal Gurung and more styled by Arianne Phillips. It may not be her most compelling work but if you love Crystal as much as we do, it’s worth a look. More
Major UK modeling agency Models1 (the Brit equivalent of Elite, which represents supes like Alessandra Ambrosio, Amber Valetta and Linda Evangelista) has united with plus-size agency Excel to form excel-Models1, the focus of which is to groom plus-size models specifically for high fashion and runway work. In a comment on my post about her magazine yesterday, Beautiful editor Sue Thomason said that she only uses models above a U.K. size 12 to “redress the balance.” In other words, since you only see skinny models in most magazines, it’s important to show an equal number of larger models in hers. This makes a certain kind of sense. I’m not saying we should live in some communist utopia where everyone gets to be a model who wants to be one, but we need to expand our concept of beauty from where it is now. It’s with this in mind that I’ve made a gallery of eight beautiful plus-size models. More
