Dear Mr. Spielberg,

“Lincoln” was big news in Richmond. We are so not over the Civil War. Just this morning there was a “history mobile” parked right outside my office, inviting me to come in and learn more about it. Going around Richmond, I usually take all the tree-lined cobblestone streets, Victorian architecture and statues for granted. But for the 55 days you were here last fall, I looked hard at Richmond—because one of my top-five celebrity crushes (that’s you, by the way, not Daniel Day-Lewis or JGL) was seeing the same views and no doubt doing a better job seeing them than I was, even if it was from behind the tinted windows of one of the black SUVs that ferried around all the above the line players. Who Should Play Mary Todd Lincoln?

It has just been announced that Daniel Day-Lewis is going to play Abraham Lincoln in an upcoming biopic. This leads, of course, to a way more interesting question: who is going to play his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln? While Jackie O is more famous, Mary had her own incredible biography. Desired by both Lincoln and his eventual opponent for the presidency, Steven A. Douglas, she totally made the right call. Three of her four kids and her husband died during her lifetime, got criticized for buying new furniture and decorations for the White House while the country was at war, and probably suffered from manic depression. In other words, it’s a very meaty role for an actress. But who could play her? More »
